Theatre workshop exercises

lesson 1

The impossible exercise

This exercise was inspired by Artaud, it was all about becoming desperate and going back to our inner animal state and bouncing off each others competitiveness.

to do the impossible exercise we first had to start by thinking of a task that we couldn't do such as walking through walls, trying to fly e.c.t. my task was to grow breasts. we then had half an hour to complete these tasks and failure wasn't an option, after ten minuets this task became difficult as most people participating became desperate and the competitiveness and the desperation became clear.

by the end of this exercise we were all exhausted emotionally and physically as for me i found it was difficult to stay focused on the one task but it has also shown me that i can change my mind frame to become purely dedicated to one task.

Artaud believed that we all had inner demons (a dark side) and at some points during believable performances these dark sides are realised and if we to listen to these dark demons we would commit atrocities, so when we watch a performance it creates a reverse physiology as after seeing a explicate or implicit performance with themes of rape, murder or theft it makes us think and creates feelings that we do not want to see.

in relation to this theory is the book and film "lord of the flies" and the actions and setting of social ranks shifting between the groups (big gens and little ens) and this ranking leads to the big gens killing some of the little ens which reflects the thoughts of if we as humans are left to our own devises to talk to this darker side we can kill, we are capable of anything.

lesson 2

"i cant tell you how i feel"

In this exercise we responded physically towards our feelings to not being able to say how we feel, to do this we started by exploring organically how we felt from nutrel, this for me i found difficult as im more verbal than i am physical but i think i found the concept.
From that we then picked a series of movements:
hands on head - this indecated stress
punching your palm- this reprocented frustration
running on the spot- aggitation
throwing yourself forward- giving all of your emotion away
being thrown back- regection
tapping chest - holding on to the feeling
pushing down to the floor- supressing your feelings
we then adapted it by sectioning evryone with a different composition of the movments above to then be added to our final piece, this section of devising has tought me that finding movments organically is one of the best ways to respond to a stimulus.
we also to add to our performance contrasted the chorus movments with a solo section performed by Tian and Nina that was purly devised by them from the given stimuli.

lesson 3
dance cards
this exercise was looking at how love and dating was in the old days, and the features of dance cards.

these were used in the 1920's so women could find a partner, so we decided to include a waltz within our picece as a way of us presenting effection .  we also made our own dance cards that we will use in our final piece. which was then addapted into a washing line to then countinue into a group dance.

lesson 4
"i love you" "tell me how you feel" "i just dont know"

today was all about different ways to say i love you, so to present this we decided to incorperate a line of people to say "i love you" in various different languages such as: spanish, italian, german, welsh and sign. we then looked at sign language and created a montage of half the group signing "tell me how you feel" and the other section signing "i just dont know" as most of the audience wont know but recognise its sign language but not understanding shows how universal love is and focuses on it being a matter of feeling and not sound making it more genuine and in the moment following thee lines of practioner brook.

lesson 5

the game show

this was all about how love is shown all around us in the form of media, so we created a game show named "she loves me she loves me not" looking at hidden meanings behind text messages, and the game show contestents would try and advise the contestant (j.alfred) to make a decision to how he should reply, there were also love doctors proffecionals
at cracking texts and having phds in love and the mind, so to emerse the audience we decided to make them into a studio audience and to make the characters really desticntive for example i played a scientist so i made my accent change into greman and changed my body postuire so there was a clear change when the game show ended.

lesson 6
speed dating

this section we wanted to incorperate the audience but instead of a normal speed dating senario the actors at the tables wernt allowed to speak meaning it created awakard tension between actor and audience, it also reprocented being to nervouse to talk to the opposite sex we then repeated this in the "i love you section" just before the end focusing on not being able to speak. this therefore made the audience feel uncomfertable as it broke the forth wall.
